This is part 3 of 4 from my Four Noble Ones series.
Symbolism plays a huge role in most if not all cultures. It is no different with the Chinese culture. Since the Song Dynasty, collectively known as the Four Gentlemen or the Four Noble Ones, are the Plum Blossom, the Orchid, the Bamboo, and the Chrysanthemum.
Depending on the sources, each of the four are said to represent the four seasons or distinct virtues.
The Bamboo represents the Summer. Its length is always linked to longevity and uprighteousness. When faced with strong winds, one would notice that the bamboo has the flexibility to sway in the most extreme angles but still does not break easily. It is due to this flexibility, it is seen that the bamboo represents tolerance and integrity.
